Donaldson prides itself on developing new technology to address the ever-changing needs of the filtration industry. In 1915, our founder Frank Donaldson invented the first air cleaner for a farmer’s tractor engine. Today, we work with our customers to develop next generation solutions. Globally, we solve contamination control challenges for a wide variety of markets ranging from today’s modern engines to computer disk drives.

INNOVATION
Donaldson has a long tradition of innovation. We invented the world standard for advanced nanofiber air filtration technology–Ultra-Web®. Donaldson began research into the chemistry and production of fibers less than a micron in diameter before they were even called nanofibers. Our first commercial application came in 1981. Ultra-Web enables longer service intervals to reduce operating costs and high efficiency for better equipment protection. Today, this innovative technology is backed by over 80 issued and pending patents, and has benefited numerous industries including dust collection, transportation, construction, agriculture, mining, military and gas turbine.
In the transportation and off-highway markets, the addition of under hood emissions control equipment and end-user demands for improved aerodynamics and sightlines requires our customers to optimize air intake performance in a much smaller space. Donaldson has responded to this need through the introduction of its revolutionary, environmentally-friendly PowerCore® filtration technology that provides a 40% size reduction compared to conventional pleated round filtration systems. Recently, Donaldson released the second generation of the technology, PowerCore® G2. This technology gives equipment manufacturers an additional 30% reduction in size and provides options for lowering restriction and increasing filter life multiplying benefits to the environment by increasing fuel economy and reducing the number of filter changes. Donaldson scientists and engineers continue to focus on bigger performance in a smaller footprint for the mobile equipment market.
TECHNOLOGY
In our efforts to continuously develop improved solutions, we leverage technology across all our end markets. For example, we recently adapted PowerCore for industrial markets by combining our PowerCore, Ultra-Web and pulse cleaning technologies. This resulted in the Torit PowerCore™ collector, which is much more compact than traditional bag collectors because it uses significantly smaller and more powerful filter packs. This new product provides greatly improved dust collection and less steel usage, lowering product and operational costs for our customers.
Another revolutionary filtration technology we’ve developed and leveraged to multiple markets is Synteq™ XP. This media takes filtration performance to the next level by using a resin-free bonding technique. Compared to previously available filter media, Synteq XP significantly increases efficiency while simultaneously reducing energy consumption. Synteq XP is used in mist collection, compressed air, closed crankcase, hydraulic and fuel filtration.
As our customers’ equipment and technology advances, we continue to develop innovative solutions that anticipate and exceed their evolving requirements on a global basis. Those solutions have resulted in over 500 active, issued or pending patent families covering a broad spectrum of our global products and technology.
