DONALDSON SUPPLIES AIR FILTRATION SYSTEMS FOR UK WARRIOR FLEET.
Donaldson Ultra-web media improves engine protection in military applications.
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – April 27, 2009 – Donaldson Company (NYSE:DCI), a leading, worldwide manufacturer of filtration systems and parts, announced today that the company has been awarded a contract (WFM/IPT2/12/43) to manufacture and supply air intake filtration systems for the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence (MOD) Warrior Infantry Fighting Vehicle fleet. The contract was announced in the Defence Contracts Bulletin dated December 15, 2008.
Donaldson Filter Components Ltd., located in Hull, U.K., will upgrade the MOD Warrior vehicle fleet with a custom-engineered air intake system. The system on the Warrior fleet incorporates Donaldson's patented Ultra-WebŪ, the world standard for advanced nanofiber air filtration technology, in Vee-PacŪ filter elements with a Donaldson Strata™ panel pre-cleaner. "The extended service intervals resulting from the application of Ultra-Web will provide the MOD with immediate and long-term cost savings through improved vehicle reliability and availability, as well as reduced maintenance requirements. Using Ultra-Web means the MOD will need to purchase significantly fewer spare filter elements, further reducing costs and the number of used filters that end up in a landfill," said Colin Andreoli, military solutions manager for Donaldson's U.K. Defence Group.
"As the Warrior fleet is upgraded with the new and improved Donaldson Air Filtration (AF) System, we are expecting both immediate benefits and long-term cost savings," said Mr Mike Venables – Director Whole Fleet Management Integrated Project Team with the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence." These armoured infantry vehicles are being used in extreme conditions, such as Afghanistan, and the legacy AF systems were simply not designed for use in such environments. The UK MOD therefore needed an air filtration system that would provide UK armed forces with improved engine protection, increased vehicle performance and higher reliability. We also wanted a solution that would increase the time between filter maintenance intervals, decrease spares consumption and simplify maintenance. We have achieved all of these requirements using the customised solution designed and manufactured by Donaldson."
Barrier filters made with Ultra-Web, such as the Vee-Pac, meet stringent efficiency, weight and space requirement and include the added benefit of nanofiber filtration technology. Ultra-Web media offers a durable and robust solution for the extreme dust environments experienced by the Warrior fleet. This translates into superior engine protection and extended filter service intervals.
Donaldson Strata panels utilize inertial particulate separation technology to spin dust and other contaminants away and deliver pre-cleaned air to the second stage barrier filter. The Strata panels are made up of many individual Strata Tubes, arranged either in a single stage or a series package depending on space and efficiency requirements. Strata Tubes have no moving parts to wear out or break. They offer low airflow restriction with efficient contaminant removal. Today, this technology is utilized in a host of military and civilian engines.
