Meet Brian Mandt

Q.  What is your role at Donaldson Company?

I manage a team of engineers in Liquid Filtration, where we develop oil and fuel filters for heavy duty diesel engines. Our newer technologies on heavy duty diesel engines lean toward a systems approach versus just a filter, and these systems require the filtration of smaller and smaller particulates. The trend is to package filters in a module on the engine that may incorporate an oil or fuel pump, a cooler and water filtration removal systems that capture and process water so it can be dispensed of in a more environmentally friendly manner.

Q.  Can you tell us about some of the things you are working on in the area of liquid filtration?

We have been developing a filtration system that incorporates multi-stage filtration for fine hard particulate and fuel water separation for fuel filtration, which is both challenging and fun. Our goal is to meet or exceed the performance of existing filters in the market. Right now, we’re working on a fuel filter system that focuses on water removal and fine particulate filtration. Engineers get excited about digging into the engine side, learning how engines operate and why they need filtration. We have sent some of our engineers to engine teardown classes, working side by side with mechanics to understand how an engine is put together and how it functions. Then we apply this knowledge to filtration. It helps us see it from a different perspective.

Q.  Where will the next breakthroughs come in liquid filtration?

I believe breakthroughs will come on the fuel filtration side because of new high pressure fuel systems that require finer and more efficient filtration to protect fuel system injectors and pumps. This is an intriguing area of opportunity for Donaldson.

Q.  What would it surprise others to know about you?

I have been in the Air National Guard for 27 years and have had the opportunity to fly an F16.
