Donaldson Coolant Filter Assemblies Can Be Used With Most High-Volume and High-Operating-Pressure, Petroleum-Based Coolant Systems
The role of coolant filters extends beyond the typical filtration function of contaminant removal. They also play a key role in replenishing coolant additives to help prevent scale formation, corrosion, and cavitation, which can lead to surface pitting. If left unchecked, these problems can prevent the transfer of heat in coolant and cause coolant systems to operate less efficiently and effectively.
Choosing the Right Coolant Filter
Coolant system filters are typically partial-flow (by-pass) filters, with less than 10 percent of the coolant flow circulating through the filter at any given time. Use of the correct filter is important for maintaining proper coolant system balance and preventing over-concentration (silicate dropout) or under-concentration, which leads to corrosion, liner pitting, or other system problems. That’s why we offer three types of coolant filters – so you can easily match the filter to your system needs and maintenance practices.
Donaldson Coolant Filter Types
There are 3 types of standard coolant filters:
- Pre-charge filters – contain enough coolant additive to initially charge the cooling system and reach the first service interval.
- Standard charge filters – contain adequate chemical additives to maintain cooling systems between service intervals. Donaldson Blue® filters with additive replenishment technology contain small amounts of time-released additives to replenish coolant and maintain healthy coolant conditions. They can also be used as a direct replacement for standard filters.
- Non-additive filters – also known as blank filters, these do not contain chemical additives and can be used with cooling systems maintained by liquid additive, systems using long-life coolants that require no additive, or on overcharged systems to bring the additive level back to a normal range. Non-additive filters are not intended to be used with water-only systems. Non-additive Donaldson Blue filters are intended for extended service coolant users and will go the distance of your coolant.
Donaldson coolant filter assemblies are compatible with petroleum-based fluids (hydrocarbons). They are also suitable for coolant systems with a volume capacity of up to 1,500 lpm / 400 gpm and operating pressure of 1,034 kPa / 150 psi.
SCAs Defend Coolant Systems
Donaldson filters with supplemental coolant additives combat a wide range of coolant system issues. If you are looking to prevent multiple coolant system problems, supplemental coolant additives (SCAs) are the answer*. Our formulations, SCA and SCA+, provide effective protection for many applications including:
- Rust
- Scale from minerals
- Acidity from antifreeze
- Intrusion of air, fuel, and oil to coolant
- Pitting of engine parts from cavitation
- Foaming from coolant aeration
- Silicate drop out from over-concentration
In situations where enhanced defense is needed, SCA+ can provide advanced protection.
*NOTE: SCA and SCA+ Additives are not compatible with Organic Acid Technology Systems

Donaldson Blue® Coolant Filters with Additive Replenishment Technology
Donaldson Blue coolant filters with additive replenishment technology maintain cooling system balance through a controlled release of additives over a period of time to maintain proper additive levels. They feature heavy-duty Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR) seals to withstand extreme cold and heat. These premium coolant filters use Synteq™ media to remove fine contaminants from sensitive coolant systems.

Non-Chemical Donaldson Blue® Coolant Filters
Non-chemical Donaldson Blue filters will go the distance of your coolant. This allows you to add liquid additives to your cooling systems as needed. These features allow the user to add liquid additives to their cooling systems as needed.
