Industry: Coal Mining Operations

Problem:

  • Reduced Filter Service Intervals. Dust caking was shortening the life of primary filter elements.
  • Compromised Engine Life. High restriction events were reducing engine efficiency and power output.
  • Increased Fuel Consumption. Clogged filters were forcing engines to work harder, consuming more fuel.
  • Reduced Machine Availability + Unplanned Maintenance. Filters needed to be changed more frequently and lower air housing bodies required frequent cleaning, increasing
  • downtime and labour costs.
  • Introduced Health and Safety Risks. Manual cleaning exposed personnel to nuisance dust, raising concerns around hygiene and silicosis.
  • Contributed to Poor Workshop Hygiene Dust carried into workshops during cleaning compromised work environments.

Solution: Trickle Valve Dust-up Assembly

The Situation:

Australian mine sites operate in harsh conditions, where extreme levels of ambient dust, high humidity, and intense heat combine to challenge vehicle reliability and air filtration systems. With mine production targets demanding maximum machine availability, minor filtration inefficiencies can translate into costly downtime, increased maintenance, and reduced fleet productivity. Many mine sites rely on standard “first-fit” dust cups designed for general operating conditions. However, under extreme conditions, these traditional designs struggle to cope with the high dust loads, static, and moisture. Dust tends to cake and accumulate rather than evacuate, leading to performance and maintenance issues. The trials were conducted across two large coal mining operations in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, which together produce more than 25 million tonnes of high-grade metallurgical coking coal annually. In such high-production environments, equipment reliability and effective air filtration are critical to maintaining availability and meeting production targets.

To address these challenges, engineers developed the Trickle Valve Dust-Cup Assembly, a purpose-built air filtration enhancement designed to meet the demands of mine sites. Traditional dust cup systems rely on intermittent evacuation through a vac valve. In high dust environments, dust can accumulate faster than it is expelled, leading to compaction and caking within the lower housing. The Trickle Valve system introduces continuous dust evacuation, allowing dust to exit the housing before accumulation occurs. This prevents restriction events and maintains consistent airflow through the filtration system.

  • Built for Extreme Conditions. Constructed from ozone-protected, UV-stable materials for exceptional longevity and resilience.
  • Anti-Caking Design. Prevents dust accumulation and caking, maintaining consistent pre-cleaner performance in high-dust environments.
  • Improved Workshop Hygiene. Minimises the need for manual cleaning and reduces dust exposure for maintenance personnel.
  • Water Ingress Protection. During washdowns, the Trickle Valve design remains sealed, preventing water ingress, keeping pre-cleaner tubes dry.

Proven Performance

  • Zero high-restriction events recorded during the trial period
  • No dust caking in lower housings or dust cups
  • Trucks exceeded or achieved filter service intervals
  • Servicing limited to major service events only
  • Improved air pre-cleaner efficiency and airflow performance
  • Eliminated the need for manual dust cup cleaning
  • Less dust transfer from field to workshop.
  • Reduced downtime and labour hours
  • Valves maintained shape with no cracking or perishing

The introduction of the Trickle Valve Dust-Cup Assembly has proven to be a significant upgrade for improving air filtration performance in Australian mining environments. By preventing dust caking and maintaining consistent airflow, the system extends filter life, reduces manual maintenance and improves equipment reliability. The success of this trial has led to the rollout of Trickle Valve assemblies across the entire haul truck fleet, setting a new standard for air filtration performance in the mining industry.
