The Situation

Australia challenges on and off-road vehicles with some of the world’s most unforgiving conditions.  Jamie Benaud is a 4WD expert who discusses all things 200 Series Toyota LandCruiser with his on-line audience and having traversed the country from top to bottom he understands the impacts Australian conditions can have upon 4WD vehicle management and maintenance.

Jamie explained, Landcruiser 200 Series owners report that dust is getting through (or past) the original air filter. This challenge referred to as engine dusting can cause rapid and serious damage to turbochargers and result in premature engine wear or even failure.

Jamie’s own testing* of various filters found some level of dust passing through each of the filters tested, and that each had created a significant increase in airflow restriction. This work was reinforced by Donaldson’s independent Air Lab Test. Donaldson testing included dust-fed and element weight averages as per ISO5011**. The results validated the OE filters average efficiency was 99.87%.

The Challenge

What was needed to solve this issue?

Jamie explained that to achieve the best result, an airbox complete with a heavy-duty filter element providing an efficiency of at least 99.9% would be required.
