For global confectionery manufacturers, protecting the purity of raw ingredients is essential to delivering consistent product quality and meeting food safety guidance. At one European production site, a leading confectionery producer reviewed its raw material handling process to identify opportunities to bolster environmental controls around sensitive ingredients such as oils, nuts, and chocolate components.
The Challenge
These ingredients were stored in bulk tanks that undergo regular filling, emptying, and temperature changes—conditions that require reliable airflow through tank vents. Prior to the project, the storage tanks were vented without proper dedicated air filtration, leaving raw materials exposed to ambient air entering the tanks during normal operation.
Bulk raw material tanks “breathe” during filling, emptying, and temperature swings. Without dedicated vent filtration, airborne particulates and microorganisms can be drawn directly into sensitive ingredients.
Recognizing the potential impact of airborne particulates and microorganisms on ingredient quality, the manufacturer identified storage tank venting as a critical application where additional protection could support its internal quality standards.
The Donaldson Approach
Donaldson partnered with the customer’s quality and maintenance teams to better understand the process conditions, operating temperatures, and airflow requirements associated with the storage tank vent application. Based on this evaluation, Donaldson recommended a vent filtration solution designed for food and beverage manufacturing environments. The solution incorporated Donaldson P-BE Tank Vent process filter housings and LifeTec™ P-SRF V sterile air filter elements applied directly to the storage tank vents. The filters were selected to help avoid airborne particulate and microbial ingress during routine tank breathing, while supporting efficient integration into the existing process.
Installation was augmented with validation activities to help ensure the filtration system was properly implemented and aligned with site requirements.
The Outcome
With vent filtration in place, the confectionery manufacturer enhanced environmental control at a key point in its raw material storage process. The addition of dedicated air filtration helps support ingredient protection by limiting exposure to airborne contaminants during daily operation.
By addressing an inadequately protected interface in the storage system, the site reinforced its commitment to ingredient quality and food safety, while maintaining operational continuity. The solution supports the manufacturer’s broader quality strategy and provides increased confidence in raw material handling across the facility.
